Expressionism Art

A modernist movement, making its way into poetry and paintings, expressionism started in Germany in the beginning of the 20th century. The primary trait of expressionism is the representation of expression. These expressions originate from deep emotions, moods or thoughts.

The artworks part of this movement sometimes distort reality and showcase highly subjective, personal, evocative qualities. Expressionism paintings are a step away from paintings that depict nature, people or other subjects are they are but rather how one feels. Thus expressionist art is often emoting through art and tends to be powerful and thought-provoking.

In 1940s America, post the Second World War, abstracts and expressionism came together as abstract expressionism. Started in New York the features of this powerful movement still influence contemporary visual artists. In fact some of the most famous painters such as Barnett Newman, Mark Rothko, and Jackson Pollock dominated this form of art practice.

In the contemporary visual arts landscape, expressionism and abstract expressionism still signify a representation of deeply emotional and personal feelings through art. Within each brushstroke, colour scheme and visual representation of expressionist paintings on Mojarto one can find the emotions and thoughts linked to the artist even if they may not be apparent or evident in the first viewing itself. Upon closer look, audiences can relate to these artworks and reflect their own emotions and feelings in them.
